If I had been my human self, I would have screamed frustrated curses at the full moon. Instead, I imbibed in a series of yaps. Iâd been hunting for hours and I could sense the sun nearing the horizon.
Lucas had lied to me. No matter how much I gave him the benefit of the doubt, his web of lies grew deeper and darker.
No fancy cabin existed where Lucas had said there would be one. Five or six miles up the Thorncreek was as empty as five or six miles down. And I was at a loss for what to do next. I took a seat on the bank of the creek, settling on my haunches.
Inspiration came in the form of wolf. A figure appeared across the river and stopped long enough to lap up creek water. While the shifter wasnât Lucas, I could smell Lucas on him. He marked the bank and then took off.
I stood, panting with my mouth open to take in as much of the scent trail as possible, determined to follow him. On and on, he ran with me following as close as I dared. Finally, I lost sight of him, but as a dark cloud covered the moon, I could make out a light between the tree trunks. But it wasnât a natural glow.
It was light from a window or a porchlight. Was this the cabin Lucas had mentioned? Carefully, I approached the dwelling. The shifter had led me to a cabin in the middle of a wide creek and probably into a trap.
The cabin might be the one Lucas told me about, just in a different location. This one was a sprawling ranch house, built on low stilts in the middle of a marshy, gravely creek bed. Water collected in pockets beneath the house and around it. A gust of wind blew through, stirring too many ordors I couldnât sort out.
I circled the cabin at a trot. His scent hung in the air and seemed fresh rather than stale. How I knew that, I could only guess, but it seemed to imply Lucas had been here recently. I took a deep breath. Today, if I had to guess, but Lucas wasnât the only one whoâd been there. At least a dozen distinct aromas permeated the air. Some were fresher than others. At the rear of the cabin, on the ground in front of the back door, I detected an acrid burst of blood. Not fresh either, but there had been a lot of it at one time and all from the same⦠shifter? Woman?
I had to see inside, but the house was too far off the ground for my wolf-self to see inside. In a crunch and crack, I morphed into the human version of me, naked from the shift, but uncaring.
Cautiously, I peered in the window, raising up on my toes to see through the blinds. A fire burned in the fireplace, and the whole place was as niceâor nicerâthan Axelâs cabin back at Thorncreek.
